The Greeks and the Irrational (Sather Classical Lectures)

In this philosophy classic, which was first published in 1951, E. R. Dodds takes on the traditional view of Greek culture as a triumph of rationalism. Using the analytical tools of modern anthropology and psychology, Dodds asks, "Why should we attribute to the ancient Greeks an immunity from 'primitive' modes of thought which we do not find in any society open to our direct observation?" Praised by reviewers as "an event in modern Greek scholarship" and "a book which it would be difficult to over-praise," The Greeks and the Irrational was Volume 25 of the Sather Classical Lectures series.

Although I don't necessarily agree with every detail in this book, it is, overall, an excellent work of scholarship and interpretation. I especially like the way the author interprets how Plato attempted to modify the irrational Greek religion and culture into something more compatible with reason. Dodds was able to achieve this insight notwithstanding his acceptance of the conventional nineteenth- and twentieth-century view of Plato as having "developed," i.e., changed, in his philosophical views over time. The latter is one way of interpreting Plato. The Straussians have a different approach. For example, as Joseph Cropsey wrote in his foreword to Leo Strauss's The Argument and the Action of Plato's "Laws" (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1975 ) (published two years after Strauss's death), "the book will engage the attention of those who continue to entertain the question whether the Laws is not a sweeping recantation that expresses Plato's senescent disenchantment with Perfection. The epigraph to this volume suggests rather that the Laws differs from the Republic not in its sovereign conception but in its decisive if tacit theme." Ibid., vii. See also Catherine H. Zuckert, Plato's Philosophers: The Coherence of the Dialogues(Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2009).

This is not a review of the excellent book itself; refer to other reviews, many of which give the book 5 stars, and so do I. The point of my writing this is to review the quality of the Kindle edition of the book, which is quite low.I own a copy of an old printing of the book, but bought the Kindle edition eagerly, because I like carrying many books in my pocket, and because I find reading easier on this lightweight and convenient device and the way you can add notes to the text. Unfortunately, The Kindle edition does not stand even close in quality to the printed book. Greek quotations (and, reader beware, they are abundant!) set in a type almost twice as small as the main text, so you need to increase font size just to be able to read the Greek type! All curly typographic quotes were replaced by straight inch marks, with the closing quotes having an extra space before them, so quotations look "like this. " All in all, it looks like the publisher chose the services of a cheap, amateur quality preparation shop for this electronic edition of the book.

Despite the many typographical errors, this is another text that talks about something basic to the western and world cultural experience. It's really sad that such an important book is treated so shabbily and published with so many errors. But it's *so* good on the ancient Greeks that I look past those errors and keep reading. I usually wouldn't do that.

Classic in the field of classics. It's brilliant scholarship embedded in rich thought.

An essential book for studying ancient Greek thought and writings. First published in 1951, it is the standard text on the subject by a very astute and knowledgable scholar.

I read this while lying on a beach in Ikaria. I enjoy mixing a bit of classic studies with lighter reading while on vacation, and in this case, I read this together with Donna Tartt's The Secret History, a riveting story of how four classics students become swept up in a murderous frenzy through their fascination for Dionysian experiences. The book illuminates some shadowy corners of the Ancient Greek Mind

A revelation, a bullet to the brain, an intellectual earthquake, I cannot get enough of Dodds, he's simply one of the greatest writers and thinkers in the history of the world.

This book covers the importance of the irrational and primitive 'petri dish' of Greek culture that is of necessity. And the importance of a 'counter reformation' to the idea of changing the modus of this Greek culture.
